Organization:
Area: Penalty Area
Set up a row of five different colored cones, five or six feet apart, in front of the goal. The coach stands ten yards from the cones with a ball. The goalkeeper starts at the center cone. The coach yells out a combination of colors (red, green, yellow in the diagram) and the goalkeeper quickly touches the cones, comes back to the center and deals with the shot.
Goal: Improve footwork speed, agility, movement efficiency, coordination, ability to change direction, stamina and overall athleticism. Improve basic goalkeeping skills, catching the ball and making falling and diving saves.
Focus Points:
-
Make (cross) steps larger when running a longer distance, makes steps smaller when getting close to the cone.
-
Always use arms when running, 'hands go from pocket to ear', to improve coordination between arms and legs, what will improve speed.
-
Stay low. Don't run straight up.
-
Get in the correct starting position/stance when getting at the final cone and getting set for the shot.
-
Proper execution of technical goalkeeping skills, such as catching, falling and diving saves.
Variations:
-
The coach plays the ball straight over the ground or low or high to the left or right of the goalkeeper.
-
The goalkeeper has to deal with two shots in a row.
-
The goalkeeper starts with the ball and rolls or throws it to the coach to start the activity.
-
Shooter tries to score.
