GK Technique - Underhand Catching #1
GK Technique - Underhand Catching #1

Organization:
Area: Penalty Area
The goalkeeper sits straight up on knees, with coach at six yards distance from the GK with ball. The coach passes the ball on the ground straight to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper deals with the ball and rolls it back to the coach. After the goalkeeper shows the correct technique, start varying the speed and distance of the pass/shot. With three or more goalkeepers, work in couples. One GK passes the ball in, the other GK catches the ball.
Goal: Learning how to catch and pick up a straight ball from the ground.
Focus Points:
-
Starting position: the goalkeeper sits straight up, with elbows bent and palms of hands facing. Eyes fixed on the ball.
-
When the ball is nearing, stretch out arms with hands next to each other. They do not touch.
-
Bring hands under the ball and let the ball roll over the arms to the chest. Use arms like a rail.
-
Secure the ball by enclosing the ball on the chest. Keep elbows together so the ball cannot fall out of the bottom.
-
The goalkeeper may fall forward on the ground and smother the ball.
-
Roll the ball back to the correct foot. No bounces in the roll. Stretch out arm and release ball very late and low. Hand almost touches the grass. Hand points to the target.
