Organization:

Area: Penalty Area

Set up a row of cones, about two feet apart. The goalkeepers start behind the cones; the coach stands at the 18-yard line or closer.  The goalkeeper rolls the ball to the coach and performs a variety of agility movements over and around the cones. When the goalkeeper is past the last cone, the coach passes the ball next to the goalkeeper, who has to make a falling save. When the goalkeeper starts on the right side of the cones, pass the ball to the left side, and vice versa.

After dealing with the ball, the goalkeeper returns to the starting point. The next goalkeeper starts.

Goal: Improve footwork speed, agility, movement efficiency, coordination, ability to change direction, stamina and overall athleticism.  Improve basic goalkeeping skills, such as passing and receiving (both feet), distribution, catching, falling and diving.

Movements:

Use a variety of agility drills, such as side-to-side shuffle, fast feet, sideways fast feet, hopscotch, One hop In and Out, 2-In, 1-Out, and so forth.

Focus Points:

  • Proper execution of all agility drills. Don't go too fast; first learn the steps, then go faster.

  • Always use arms, 'hands go from pocket to ear', to improve coordination between arms and legs, what will improve speed.

  • Proper execution of technical soccer and goalkeeping skills.

Variations:

  • The coach plays the ball off the ground.

  • The coach throws the ball further and higher and the goalkeeper has to make a diving save.

  • The goalkeeper gets back up after making the first save and has to make a second save.

  • The goalkeeper starts off with throwing or passing the ball to the coach to start the activity.
