Organization:
Area: Penalty Area
The goalkeeper sits straight up on knees, with the coach at six yards distance from the goalkeeper with a ball. The coach throws the ball next to the goalkeeper, half high. The goalkeeper falls on the side and catches the ball. After the catch, the goalkeeper rolls or throws the ball back. After the goalkeeper shows the correct technique, start varying the speed and distance of the throws. Maybe even shoot the ball.
Goal: Learning how to fall on the side to catch the ball.
Focus Points:
-
Starting position: the goalkeeper sits straight up, with elbows bent and palms of hands facing. Eyes fixed on the ball.
-
When the ball is thrown, both hands go from the hips towards the ball and the goalkeeper falls over on the side of his/her body.
-
Legs: when falling to the left bring the right knee towards the chest. When falling to the right, bring the left knee towards the chest. The opposite leg rotates a bit and stretches out. This should all be a flexible motion. Not stiff.
-
During the fall stretch out arms and keep them away from the body. The hands go behind and partially on top of the ball.
-
The goalkeeper can either bring the ball to the chest to secure or bring the ball to the ground with the hands on top of it.
